THERE’S A GREAT CHANCE that Tropical Storm Beta will be out of the way by Thursday, a date that will usher in a very busy weekend of sports across the board.
Wednesday: The Astros continue their sprint to the expanded postseason field when Zack Greinke (3-2, 3.90 ERA) takes the mound at the Mariners, who will counter with Nick Margevicius (1-3, 5.35 ERA). AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start with the pregame show at 5:00pm, leading into the 5:40pm gametime.
Thursday: Class 5A and 6A schools finally get to hit the gridiron as Friendswood visits Summer Creek and Santa Fe travels to Brazoswood. Both games kick off at 7:00pm.
Texas City will be among the teams participating in the Bulldog cross-country Invitational that begins at 8:00am.
The final regular season series of 2020 begins for the Astros with a 7:05pm date at the Rangers. Cristian Javier (4-2, 3.33 ERA) starts for Houston against Texas hurler Lance Lynn (6-2, 2.53 ERA). AT&T Sportsnet Southwest and Fox Sports Southwest will each have the game live, with both starting their pregame shows at 6:30pm.
Friday: Finally, a full slate of high school football is on the docket, beginning with Hitchcock at Houston Christian and La Marque at Huffman-Hargrave at 7:00pm. The regular season begins for 5A and 6A programs with Clear Brook at Texas City, Clear Creek at Oak Ridge, Clear Falls at Pearland Dawson, state-ranked Katy at Clear Springs (Challenger), Dickinson at state-ranked Manvel and Angleton at Galveston Ball each beginning at 7:00pm.
The volleyball slate will have Clear Brook at Shadow Creek, Cinco Ranch at Clear Falls and Clear Springs at Memorial starting at 5:30pm. Clear Creek at Pearland, Dickinson at Pasadena Dobie, Friendswood at Galveston Ball, Manvel at Santa Fe and Baytown Lee at Texas City each get underway at 6:30pm.
Hometown Heroes Park in League City will be the site for the CCISD cross-country Invitational. Each of the district’s five high schools will be joined by the likes of Friendswood and Galveston Ball when the running gets going at 7:00am.
The high school tennis schedule will have Texas City at Goose Creek Memorial at 4:00pm. Friendswood at Galveston Ball has yet to set a time for their matchup.
Houston turns to Jose Urquidy (1-1, 2.78 ERA) in the second game of the series at Texas, who will hand the ball to Kyle Cody (1-1, 1.53 ERA). AT&T Sportsnet Southwest (Astros) and Fox Sports Net Southwest (Rangers) are both on the air with pregame shows at 6:30pm right before the 7:10pm start time.
Saturday: There is more high school volleyball on the schedule, beginning with Friendswood at George Ranch at 10:00am. Clear Falls at Langham Creek and Clear Springs at Katy Tompkins are each 11:00am starts, while Clear Creek at College Station and Dickinson at Baytown Sterling are at 1:00pm. Friendswood hosts Houston Memorial at 3:00pm.
A busy Saturday of college football will start with #8 Texas at Texas Tech at 2:30pm (KRIV-26), followed by North Texas at Houston (ESPN+), Houston Baptist at Louisiana Tech (ESPN3) and Stephen F. Austin at SMU (ESPN+) at 6:30pm. Texas A&M, ranked 10th in this week’s poll, opens its season at home against Vanderbilt at 6:30pm (SEC Network).
Lance McCullers Jr. (3-2, 4.87 ERA) makes his final regular season start of 2020 at 6:05pm when the Astros face the Rangers. Kyle Gibson (2-5, 5.18 ERA) gets the nod for the Rangers.
