Third graders place a thousand flags on veterans’ graves

Students and veterans from Texas City ISD’s Heights Elementary School’s Adopt A Veteran Program will place a thousand flags on the gravesites of veterans at the Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery, 7301 Memorial Street, Hitchcock TX, at 9 am, Friday, May 24.

This is the fifth year the Thanking Our Veterans Program has honored area veterans for their service. The program began in 2013 when third grade students and teachers assisted VFW Post 8248 in placing flags on veterans’ graves at Galveston County Memorial Cemetery.  Third graders adopt a veteran to honor them for their service. Any area veteran can participate.  The program is funded by a grant from the Texas City I.S.D. Foundation for the Future.

A patriotic program follows the placing of the flags at nearby Jack Brooks Park, 5700 FM 2004 and SH 6 (8 min, 2.8 mi via TX-6 N and FM 2004 N). Members of the Veterans Coalition will conduct patriotic activities and provide everyone with a picnic lunch. New this year, the Colonel H.B. Moore Post 89 American Legion Motorcycle Riders will escort the school buses to the cemetery.
