People. That’s what Joe Wilson says is the best part of his job. A Texas City ISD employee for the past 22 years, Wilson’s job as one of the district’s mail carriers takes him from one end of the district to the other as he makes deliveries at each of TCISD’s campuses in Texas City.
The people he meets and talks to each day are the highlight of his day. “I’m a relationship kind of person, so I’m always talking to people constantly,” he says. After breakfast with his wife and grandson each morning, Wilson punches in at maintenance (his home department) before starting his rounds about 9 a.m. He says he’s sure to tell everyone “good morning” because it’s a good way to start the day.
“It’s a good starting point to find where people are at because I talk to each of them,” Wilson says. “I get to know people, I pray for people, people pray for me. “It’s what I believe God is calling me to do.”
Wilson started in TCISD as a painter after working 21 years at Lipton Tea. Combining his time at Lipton and TCISD, along with military service – he served in the Army – and several years working on his own, Wilson says he’s worked for nearly 60 years of his life. The mail carrier job, he says, extended his work life. “It’s fast-paced; I’m running,” Wilson says. “I’m in and out of my van about 60 or 70 times a day and put in roughly over 10,000 steps a day.”
At the end of the day, though, he’s happy to return home to eat supper with his family and take care of whatever needs doing around the house. Although, if nothing needs to be done, that’s even better, he says. But he always looks forward to the next day when he can make his rounds and talk to everyone he meets.
“I think all mail men are like that.”
