The Texas City Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a new policy to ensure students a safe and respectful learning environment where their “cultural, racial and ethnic diversity is valued” and where they receive an education that maximizes their potential for success.
The Racial and Ethnic Equity policy is part of the district’s effort to eliminate racism and biases that impact students, staff and families.
Texas City ISD will work intentionally to address several measures, including:
•Identifying and eliminating racial and ethnic disparities among students.
•Eliminating systems and practices in the District that create racial and ethnic disparities in educational opportunity and achievement.
•Promoting practices that focus on equity, diversity and inclusion and that are free of bias, prejudice and discrimination.
“Our first step is to focus on culturally responsive leadership in the district,” Superintendent Melissa Duarte said. “We will also look at equity and access when setting our mission, vision and values.”
Duarte added that the district will establish a committee that will begin to process and evaluate data to establish a direction of inclusion and student and staff support.
