Your Local Library News
By: Bridget Buffa
Do you remember I told you we had some exciting news coming about Moore Memorial Library? If you are like me and many others I know, we have been waiting and wishing for updated changes to be made. The community spoke and they listened! The library is happy to announce that the current building will be undergoing major renovations this fall! We asked for more group study areas, comfortable furniture for reading, and more areas to charge our electronics. In August, the library will begin renovations to create a new library experience for users.
Upon entering, the library’s entryway will be transformed into a lounge area equipped with comfortable seating and vending machines for food and drinks. To the left of this area, the children’s section will include an interactive area for their youngest users. They will be adding two small study rooms for individuals to reserve. The local history room will be split in half to accommodate group study areas equipped with technology enabling audio visual presentations. In the library’s interior, the book shelves will be rearranged and more seating will be added. During the months-long project, the library building will likely be closed to users. But don’t worry, library services will be moved off-site, but may be limited during this time.
We will keep you updated as the renovations begin. The Texas City community is very fortunate to have such a wonderful Library to meet our needs and it’s only going to get better!
Congratulations children (and parents) you made it through another school year! It’s time to celebrate and have some FUN.
Readers of all ages are invited to participate in the Summer Reading Program. Pick up a library reading log at the library beginning on Monday, June 3rd and record your reading time until Friday, August 2nd. It doesn’t matter whether you read magazines, e-books or print books, or listen to audiobooks – record your daily reading time for a chance to win prizes! Complete as many logs as possible to increase your chance of winning!
Remember, reading in the summer is essential for children so they don’t lose the progress they made during the school year. Readers of all ages are lifelong learners, so we encourage our entire community to read and read often.
Do you know a Teenager (ages 13 – 18) that wants to help the library run more smoothly and earn service hours in return? They can apply to be a volunteer to help keep the library organized for guests and to help staff prepare for upcoming programs. All earned service hours can be used to enhance college applications, improve job resumes, and meet service organization requirements, such as those required by the National Honor Society. Once applications are submitted, our Volunteer Coordinator will contact them to schedule a mandatory volunteer orientation. After attending the orientation, new VolunTeens can sign up for specific volunteer times! Applications and additional information are available at the Reference Desk.
