CONCLUDING ONE OF THE MOST remarkable careers in Dickinson High School football history, Gators senior quarterback Mike Welch was named the District 24-6A Most Valuable Player after leading Dickinson to a 10-2 record and the district crown.
Welch, who is also a finalist for the Houston Touchdown Club Offensive Player of the Year, completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 2,016 yards with 17 touchdowns and rushed 121 times for 716 yards with 22 touchdowns. He also finished his stint at Dickinson with 21 career wins, tying Bobby LaFleur for the second-most career victories and falling one win short of tying Donnie Little for first place.
Teammate Savien Arnett was named the district’s defensive MVP as the senior safety helped anchor a unit that ranked among the Houston area’s top defenses during the regular season. Sophomore running back Reggie Sanders shared the 24-6A newcomer of the year with Clear Creek sophomore running back/receiver Jeremiah Crum, while John Snelson was selected as the district’s top coach.
Clear Falls quarterback Gavin Esquivel was named offensive player of the year as he helped guide the Knights to the program’s first postseason since 2013.
