A yellow rose, photographed by Galveston Art League member Pat Jakobi, has been printed onto a 4-by-4-inch acrylic block that can stand on its own, be displayed on a small easel, or serve as a paperweight. It’s $40 at the Art League’s holiday gift sale from Dec. 4-27.
Karen Calhoun’s painting, “Lemons,” is available as part of the Galveston Art League’s small-art holiday sale from Dec. 4-27. You may view and purchase art from this special grouping of small works from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at the Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston, and at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. All pieces in this special sale are smaller than about 12 inches at their widest measurement and everything is priced at $75 or less. Larger works also are displayed and for sale in the gallery as part of the Art League’s December membership show.

Galveston Art League, which recently expanded its gallery hours, invites public support for two fun and affordable fundraisers during the holiday season.

From 12:00pm to 6:00pm, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through December 27, the Galveston Art League Gallery, located at 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston, will feature small original works by local artists. These pieces measure about 12 inches at the widest point. Everything is priced at $75 or less.

The enticingly priced artworks, plus larger pieces on display in the Art League Gallery, also are pictured and offered for sale at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com, which provides online checkout with credit cards. (Those wishing to purchase in other ways such as via check may do so by emailing gallery2117@gmail.com.)

“The idea is to offer shoppers the opportunity to easily purchase a one-of-a-kind item as a gift during the holiday season,” says Margo Donaldson Snider, Art League president.

The second late-fall fundraiser for the nonprofit Art League is a party-basket raffle. Practically everything you need to throw your socially distanced holiday party – especially a festive New Year’s Eve bash – is in the basket. Contents include wine and spirits such as Tito’s vodka to snacks, napkins, and a nautical-theme wine stopper in case you happen to have some of your tasty libation left over.

Raffle tickets are $10 apiece or three for $25. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn on December 20.

Galveston Art League was founded in 1914 with the mission of advancing visual arts, art appreciation, and art education in Galveston County and beyond. The Art League has never had a salaried member on its staff. Volunteers run the league and handle duties ranging from staffing the gallery and organizing judged art competitions to hosting free and low-educational workshops for children and adults. The league also organizes featured artist exhibits that promote talented artists in the area.

Snider says Covid-19 has been very disruptive to Art League operations. “We’ve had to cancel several workshops and our children’s’ summer camp, and we couldn’t hold our main annual fundraiser, our fall gala. The holiday gift sale and party-basket raffle will help us keep the lights on until the pandemic subsides. The past months have been difficult, but we’re adapting. We hold our board meetings virtually, and we’re doing online sales for people who aren’t venturing out to the gallery to see the artworks in person.

“We’re counting on Galveston County’s supportive art lovers and holiday shoppers in general to help us – and help themselves by purchasing a lovely piece of original art,” Snider says. As shoppers purchase artwork, new pieces will be added to the holiday gift sale, so shoppers should check back to see the updated inventory.
