Friendswood High School had three students named semifinalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

This competition evaluates the scores high school students (not exceeding their junior year) receive on their Preliminary SAT (PSAT) / National Merit Qualifying Test (NMQT) to create a selection index score. This score is calculated by doubling the sum of the reading, writing and language, and math test scores.

Of the 1.6 million entrants, only 16,000 of the top-scoring students are selected to advance to the next round of being a semifinalist.

The FHS semifinalists are Chumeng Cai, Connor Gibson and Balint Kidd.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition to receive one of the 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth $31 million.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMNSC) is a not-for-profit organization that was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.  Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 410 independent sponsors and higher education institutions that share the NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2022 will be notified beginning in March and continuing to mid-June 2022.

The four FHS students will be recognized and honored at the Oct. 11 meeting of the Friendswood ISD School Board.
