Drill Teams have been around for as long as I can remember and they are a uniquely TEXAS pastime. In fact, The first drill team was created by Gussie Nell Davis in at Greenville High School in Greenville, Texas. Known as the Flaming Flashes, the drill team performed during every halftime show at the school. Davis then created a college drill team in Kilgore, Texas, the well-known Kilgore Rangerettes.
Drill teams serve a critical purpose in the development of young minds and bodies. The experience of belonging to a drill team helps build confidence by challenging the participants in a manner that allows them to experience belonging. With all the smartphones, social media, apps, etc. for young people to interact with, opportunities like drill teams take on a vital role in keeping students connected – to their schools and to one another.
Supporting this effort means that young people who might otherwise be unable to participate, can travel to competitions, and experience being on an even keel with their schoolmates. It provides them all with the equipment they need to practice and the costumes they need to perform. Supporting this organization means you are empowering young women to feel a part of something important and to experience success that comes from hard work and dedication. In my book, that beats the heck out of a Caramel Machiatto any day.
