Want to see the quickest, loudest and most exciting race cars on the planet?
That’s easy, just go to Baytown this weekend. The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) will be in Baytown this weekend for the Mopar Express Lane, NHRA Spring Nationals Presented by Pennzoil. This is an annual event at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown. Many classes will compete headed by five professional classes including Nitro Harley motorcycles. Top Fuel and Funny Cars sporting about 10,000 horsepower complete the 1,000 foot race at over 330 miles per hour. In doing so they usually use up 2 tires, 16 spark plugs, 9 quarts of oil and about $300 of Nitro Methane fuel. After each race they have about 45 minutes to rebuild the engine and be ready to do it again assuming they won the last race. If you have never seen this, it should be on your bucket list. NHRA racing at Baytown is unique in that every ticket is a free pit pass and parking is free.
Note: If you get too close to a Nitro Fuel race car while it is running the exhaust fumes will burn your eyes; it’s nitric acid vapors. Don’t worry it won’t’ kill you or make you blind, if it did I would not be writing this today.
The racing schedule:
Friday — Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars qualifying 4:30/pm and 7:15/pm.
Saturday — Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars qualifying 2:30/pm and 5:00/pm.
Sunday – Final Eliminations start at 11:00/am.
Check out NHRA website for more details and ticket information.
Race track is at: 2525 South FM 565, Baytown
