Dem Roots, a regional reggae band featured by The Post Newspaper in 2021, was only one of
the highlights of the community Thanksgiving celebration in Galveston at MarMo on Tuesday.
Other highlights included a cooperative balmy climate and serving tables filled with a
Thanksgiving feast.
The feast was a potluck with many hands preparing dishes for the community event. Attendees
brought many original recipes for sharing. One local islander contributed her combination of
kale, sweet potatoes, a few other ingredients, and a richly flavored salad dressing. Her clever
combination made for an enjoyable light salad.
The event was planned as a gesture to help those in need and for those who wanted to enjoy a
great evening. Bags of groceries were available for those in need to take home. The feast was
free to all who came, even if they couldn’t contribute to the potluck.
Music, dinner, and the option to purchase a cocktail from MarMo Café or select a free non-
alcoholic beverage made for an evening of comfort and relaxation for attendees.
“I really enjoyed myself. This was a thoughtful and fun way to bring in Thanksgiving,” said one
of the guests.
MarMo is a non-profit innovation center on Market Street in Galveston. The center focuses on
providing affordable office space to local entrepreneurs and non-profits while supporting creative
ideas and local artists.
